What do I need to convert my video clip to, to be able to view it?

I downloaded a torrent and its a video clip file. When I play it on my windows media player I can only hear the sound. I remember a friend telling me what to go months ago but I can’t recall which file to convert it to, to be able to transfer it on my flash drive and watch it on my tv, any help please?
