Downing a yard of Ale: Why does it help to rotate the glass ?
filed in Xde La on Nov.26, 2009
So the difficulty of downing a yard of ale
other than over 3 pints of beer is the bulb at the bottom of the glass slucing the remaining beer over your shirt.
They say the solution to this is to rotate the glass.
But why is this ?
OK but why does rotating prevent "blow back?" Thanks for your help.

It stops the air causing "blow back" when it enters the bulb.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldrp-mGqX1Y&feature=related this clip from beerfest explains it pretty well. like, well, the start of it does anyway. the rest of the explanation is shown later in the movie when they realize that turning the boot at the right time gets rid of the air bubble so therefore it stops the beer from coming back at you

Because its breaks the surface tension of the liquid (beer in this case) and allows air to enter the bulb without forming a bubble
